Question 1
How will your party address the affordability problems facing Ontarians, including:
The housing shortage and barriers to building housing in infill locations with denser urban formats that would help lower costs and better match what families need.
Liberal Party response:
Team Bonnie will build more homes by leveraging the Better Communities Fund to incentivize density, smart, sustainable growth near transit and community infrastructure. Our plan, “More Homes You Can Afford,” outlines how we will build purpose-built rentals, ‘missing middle’ homes, and higher-density housing along transit corridors and arterial roads, using innovative solutions like prefabricated homes.
Increasing the frequency and reliability of public transportation and improving active transportation options to reduce dependency on costly personal vehicles.
Liberal Party response:
Team Bonnie will boost capital and operational funding to transform public transit by maintaining, refurbishing, upgrading, and expanding transit infrastructure to deliver fast, reliable, safe, accessible, affordable, and frequent service. One way we will improve the reliability and safety in transit is by installing platform screen doors on TTC. Through the Better Communities Fund, we will incentivize building higher density homes near transit hubs allowing more people to live in walkable communities and boosting ridership.
Taking full advantage of low-cost solar and wind power and efficiency measures and working with Quebec to deliver power storage services to lower energy costs.
Liberal Party response:
Team Bonnie will ensure that Ontarians have a reliable, affordable, and clean electricity system, which requires strong connections and cooperation with our neighbors. An Ontario Liberal government will work with all neighboring jurisdictions and the federal government to decarbonize our electricity grid and boost our capacity to strategically trade clean electricity.
Still rising grocery bills and growing food insecurity that may be increased by climate change and development on vital farmlands.
Liberal Party response:
Team Bonnie will first and foremost protect the Greenbelt and other prime agricultural land. Farmers feed our communities. Ontario’s nutrient-rich soil needs to be leveraged to help food security, boost supply, and reduce emissions – especially with Trump’s unnecessary tariffs. Ontario’s Liberals have previously committed to boosting the Risk Management Program so that farmers can have the tools to deal with inflation, supply chain disruption, climate change, and geopolitical instability. Finaly, we will use nature-based agricultural solutions such as crop cover, nitrogen management, and rotational grazing to reduce emissions and protect, manage, and restore agricultural
lands. It is critical that we prevent the destruction and deterioration of the greenspaces that protect communities from flooding and other natural disasters.
Question 2
How will your party improve the livability and health of our communities in a way that reduces exposure to toxins and protects vital natural areas, specifically:
The huge infrastructure challenges facing municipalities, including the need to increase climate resilience and access to healthy green space combined with the need to get maximum value from public infrastructure dollars.
Liberal Party response:
Team Bonnie will ensure municipalities have access to flexible, reliable, and predictable funding through the Better Communities Fund so they can keep infrastructure assets in a state of good repair and build new resilient infrastructure to keep up with growth. We will reverse the funding cuts to Conservation Authorities, equipping them with the tools and resources to prevent flooding, support disaster mitigation and adaptation, and collaborate with Indigenous communities. We will help municipalities execute projects – in collaboration with Conservation Authorities – like naturalized landscaping, permeable pavements, and rain harvesting.
Question 3
How will your party seize opportunities to grow Ontario’s economy and jobs, specifically:
Building a more circular economy that reduces over reliance on single-use products.
Liberal Party response:
Team Bonnie will reform waste-management standards to support the development of the circular economy, such as establishing a province-wide deposit return system for beverage containers, incentivizing consumers to return containers for recycling and significantly reducing litter and waste. Additionally, we will incentivize the use of recovered materials in public procurement projects.
Making the most of energy transition possibilities while ensuring impacts do not outweigh benefits for workers or the environment.
Liberal Party response:
Team Bonnie will procure 30,000 MW of new nuclear and other clean energy projects. We will offer a permanent tax credit worth 20% of the installation cost of energy-saving technologies at home, such as heat pumps. We will strategically transition to using natural gas as a backup while investing in nuclear, solar, wind, and other renewable sources of energy. We will invest in energy and thermal storage solutions, battery recycling, and exploring hydrogen fuel’s potential.
Better recognizing the immense value of ecosystem services like climate control, clean air and clean water and the linkage of these to human health.
Liberal Party response:
Team Bonnie believes that clean air, clean water, and green spaces form the foundation of healthy communities. That starts with protecting 30% of Ontario’s land and water, which in addition to safeguarding the Greenbelt, will include expanding existing provincial parks, establishing new urban parks, and preserving wetlands. It also means protecting drinking water sources, particularly in vulnerable and Indigenous communities; safeguarding Ontario’s forests and communities from growing wildfire threats by enhancing vegetation management in at-risk areas; and strengthening the Great Lakes Protection Plan and the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan so we can protect and remediate these watersheds while reducing phosphorus runoff. We will develop new overnight camping facilities in Ontario’s provincial parks to allow more people to be able to enjoy nature and be in touch with greenspaces.
Most importantly. Team Bonnie will make sure that every person in Ontario has a family doctor within four years. While restoring, managing, and protecting our ecosystems is incredibly important, we also need to take immediate action to make sure 2.5 million people in Ontario that are without a family doctor can access one.
Using GHG emission reduction efforts to drive new economic opportunities and jobs across the province.
Liberal Party response:
Team Bonnie will develop a Made in Ontario environmental action plan in conjunction with the federal government and other provinces to facilitate emissions reduction. We will create jobs by building public transit and investing in clean energy infrastructure. We will make once in a generation investment to procure 30,000 MW of electricity from nuclear and other clean sources. We will also invest in protecting prime farmland and boosting our sustainable agri-food sector, as outlined above.
